The objective of submitting your site to various web directories is that they approve it and include your site in their directories, right?  Many editors will reject a site without even entering if they see certain bad website habits.  Before you submit anything, it is wise to look over your site and consider the following advice:

Clean up your home – Home page, that is.  Many editors don’t even get past the home page, so it’s important to have your “home” in order.  You site should have a good look and provide something of value to your visitors.

No wordplay in the title – Thinking that turning your site title into a series of keywords is going to create a SEO bonanza is tragic.  Doing this will probably just get your site rejected.  Use something relevant but don’t go overboard.

Follow the Rules – Most directories have implemented rules to reduce the number of questionable site submissions that they receive, so don’t think skirting the rules will help with your submission.  This will get you noticed, but probably only for a rejection.  Also, remember that a couple of obvious things will likely lead to a rejection: repeat submissions, foreign language sites (non-English) and locations other than home pages.  Remember that your objective is that the information you submit, or someone submits for you is approved by the directories you choose.

Put Your Submission in the Right Basket – Web site submission has become quite automated; more and more, people try to use automated submissions to flood the Internet with their questionable web pages.  These automated submissions typically get submitted to high level categories or incorrect categories.  Because of this automated intrusion, site editors rarely correct categories in submissions; they simply reject them.  It is always wise to take a little more time to ensure you submit to the category that is best for your site.

Don’t Litter – Let’s face it, there are some shady sites created these days by an incredible number of people whose sole purpose is to make money through ads.  All too often, these sites are nothing more than copied content, clones of countless other sites for the sole purpose of generating Google Adsense hits.  If you litter your site with Adsense, the editor reviewing your web site submission will likely view your site as one of these and reject it.  Starting with your home page, you should consider removing at least part of your Adsense for a month after your site submission.  You can add it back later but remember that part of getting people to take your site seriously is having a professional looking site.

Remember that the purpose of a web site submission is to get approved.  A successful site submission doesn’t happen when the directory editor reviews your info; a site gets approved because of what you’ve done with your site BEFORE your submission.
